I’ve been backpacking in North India and loved it, Middle-East and South Europe. Í love little adventure, meeting new people, seeing new places and sometimes just chilling.
What I don’t like is when people are trying to cheat me ten times a day, lie to me straight to face and it doesn’t matter how big smile they have while doing it. either too spicy or tasteless food. So just few things that happened.
Again I’m writing this with only for one reason: to warn other travellers. We took a taxi from the airport to Matara, it was organized by local “friend’ of friend and the guy seemed to be super nice and friendly (paid 70 usd). He told us to come to Kandy to visit him and said it was an amazing place etc.
After few days on the beach we decided to listen to his advice and went there. However when he saw that we are not going to the expensive hostel he recommended us and that we are not hiring him as tour guide he and his friend that we also got to know didn’t meet us even once. And turned out that Kandy is just super hot and overcrowded place. But that’s okay.
Next, we got overtalked by also a very nice guy to take a ride with attractions on the way from Kandy to Ella. Well amazingly enough on the way all the attractions disappeared and instead, we were just going straight to Ella. So here we said either you provide service that you promised or we don’t pay.
In the end paid only for the ride, less than what we agreed from the beginning. So they didn’t really manage to cheat us, but the experience was terrible. And that’s my main point. Its really hard and annoying but its a must to stand for your rights and either demand the service you’ve been promised to or don’t pay for it. At this point of was still thinking maybe its only me. but we met one really nice couple, I think they were Germans in Ella and the said exactly the same thing happened to them.
Then at least once a day in shops and restaurants they “forget” to bring you change, and sometimes it’s 5 rupees and sometimes 500. Again, in the beginning, I thought it’s must be a coincidence, but it happens all the time and not only to me. And there were a few more things that happened on the way that I don’t have power to mention.
To be fair the things that I did enjoy here were; first in life surfing lesson and experience in general, really good ayurvedic massage in spice garden in Kandy and really nice room at Sudumal cottage in Ella, we had our own swing and small fish pool outside the room and room itself was very nice, but not sure if all the rooms there has this.
So this is my story, my personal experience.
