Ok guys, posting this as a warning of my experience in Ubud this morning. Having checked out of Ubud Tropical Garden I decided to change some Sterling currency to IDR before travelling to Sanur.
Having handed over my cash, the guy asked me to count the money he gave me which was correct, he then asked if I had a IDR small note to round the sum up, I dutifully handed it over. When I got back to the hotel, something made me count the money again and to my horror it was IDR 400,000 short.
I quickly realised that when I went into my wallet to get the small note out, he ‘may’ have taken back some of the notes. I went back and challenged him, however he was a picture of innocence and I had no real proof of any wrongdoing so accepted the loss.
This post is just a warning to other travellers, the office is located on the opposite side of the Ubud Tropical Garden hotel about 75 metres to the right (going away from Monkey Forest). I am reasonably well travelled and realise I was naive and should really have asked for advice from the hotel about trustworthy money exchanges, but hindsight is a wonderful thing!!
I was relaying the story to our driver on the way to Sanur, he commented that they have only been open about a month and they were not local to Ubud. On a positive note, loved Ubud and this did not detract from our stay. Hope this helps somebody.
