Hi, can’t find this on the internet, and it’s just happened to us in phom penh, so thought I’d share.
At the Russian market we went to the food vendor section indoors, we wanted to experiment with the local food, so bypassed the English speaking vendors who were shouting at us to sit down and order with them. We selected a more quiet stall, wasn’t quite sure what we were ordering but said 1 please and thought we would try.
All going well, ate our food then when it came to paying she said 1 dollar, we handed her over a perfectly fine bill, started to walk away, she went behind her stall for about 10 seconds then starting shouting after us, excuse me sir, she was waving a crumpled and torn bill at us, saying she wouldn’t accept the bill.
This wasn’t our bill at all. When we said so, she started screaming at us, got the other vendors to also surround us, demanding we give her essentially another dollar and we take this rogue note that we didn’t give her in the first place.
One woman vendor grabbed my arm and was trying to get me to open my bag to give her money. We kept saying no you are lying, but to get them to leave us alone handed over another dollar.
It’s not the amount of money at all, but it was the principle, and totally ruined our experience of the market, and the total dishonesty of it! Anyway thought I should warn others, as clearly she targeted us as western tourists, couldn’t see anything about this scam in the lonely planet or on the internet.
