This actually happened to me a few years back, but in the UK! It was in Winchester (circa 2002) – in the Car park at Tesco which is close to the M3 Interchange. I was loading my shop into the back of my car when a blue Fiat Punto with Italian plates pulled up behind me.
A well dressed, older gent asked for directions, I replied in Italian and guess what? Turns out he came from my family’s home town in Italy! What a coincidence!
He then told me he worked for Gucci and he was on his way home to Italy with some samples. As I had helped him – and seeing as we were almost related – he offered me a free ‘Gucci’ leather bomber jacket in a paper carrier bag. He told me it was mine to keep! He got out the car and placed the bag by my feet and explained that he had come off the M3 looking for petrol as he was almost run out and his credit card was not working in the Uk. Could I give him £50 for petrol/the jacket? I told him I had no cash – but he said there was an ATM in the supermarket, I could get the cash and he would wait. How did he know that I wondered? I should have gone and called the police but instead I refused and without saying another word he picked up the bag got back in his car an roared off. I didn’t think to get his registration plate number but I thought surely, there can’t be many Italian reg Puntos running round Southern England? However Hampshire Constabulary were not interested as they said no crime had been committed and the officer I spoke to seemed to think the con man’s story was plausible!
