While attempting to purchase a ticket, I was sexually assaulted by the manager the Zanzibar office on 13th of March around 13:30. There was a camera directly facing my assailant (which I was told was malfunctioning). I attempted to file a police report to no avail and was told the incident was a “cultural misunderstanding”.
To be clear, my assailant refused to identify himself and returned money to me (which I did not ask for) by shoving the money down my shirt into my breasts. I must stress, he had his bare hands on my breasts. After-which, I physically reacted and he immediately attempted to slap me in the face.
This happened in front of a room full of people and the following staff on duty:
Security staff: Salimu shareef Ali
Front office staff: Sharifa Ali Nassour

Please note, the “altercation” started because we believed to have been up-charged in ticket price for two-$50 USD VIP tickets. We requested from Sharifa a formal receipt indicating our payment in tsh while she refuted and said “it’s company policy” to exchange money at a higher rate. Regardless, Sharifa was not only rude from the moment we walked up, but they both conspired to “not get us home” because we requested the aforementioned receipt.
I am not only disgusted in the treatment by Azam staff, but it is disparaging at best being a U.S. citizen and patron of this business to be assaulted in daylight in the Azam, Zanzibar office. Note, I also have a recording in Swahili of the discussions which took place during my failed attempt at filing a police report locally in the presence of both Sharifa and the manager/my assailant. I can describe his physical appearance as: around 5’8’’, medium-sized build, balding. The day of he was wearing a short-sleeved blue button-up shirt with navy slacks.
Women, beware of this misogynist and the rude staff members upholding his behavior.
