Before summer begins I thought you might be interested in just one of the scams Spanish car hire companies pull on tourists.
On April 4th 2019 I hired a car with INTERRENT who are part of GOLDCAR car hire at Malaga airport. I have hired cars at Malaga on numerous occasions and am well aware of the hard sell from the various car hire companies who all try to get you to pay for their expensive excess insurance. For this reason I buy my own annual excess insurance in the UK.
When I collected the car I had the usual spiel from the customer service representative who tried to sell me their insurance but I made it clear I did not want their insurance as I had my own. She then said I would have to be charged €200 to cover a full tank of fuel. When I complained she said it would be fully refunded on return of the car, provided the fuel tank was full.
I was asked to sign the screen of an electronic card reader and at no point did I sign any paper insurance document.
When my credit card bill arrived I saw I had only been refunded £65.57 instead of the full amount of £160.35, which I was entitled to after bringing the car back full. when I checked the paperwork I had kept from INTERRENT I saw amongst the documents a bill for the remaining £94.78 for insurance. I also noticed my signature at the bottom of the page which I had never signed. The signature was different to my signature had I been signing a paper document, it was typical of a card reader signature and not as clear.
This is pure fraud as far as I’m concerned as I made it clear I didn’t want or need insurance. Also, my signature was copied on to a document I had never seen. When I complained to INTERRENT I was told my signature was on the document, end of story. For this reason my credit card company, Santander, wouldn’t dispute the case on my behalf.
After checking forums INTERRENT and GOLDCAR are notorious for this scam amongst many others.
Spain needs tourism more than ever at the moment and these companies are doing nothing but damage to the industry.
