I was in Athens for a business trip and I decided to take the metro from the airport to Monastiraki, where my hotel was. It was busy on the metro and I was trying to hold on to my luggage. At one of the stops, a large group of people entered the carriage and it become really crowded.
Suddenly a man spoke to me in a foreign language and I only understood “Monastiraki”. I was trying to decipher what was being said when a lady suddenly spoke very loudly in English to look out for my wallet. I looked down at my bag and it was opened. Fortunately nothing was stolen because I hid my wallet in another part of the bag. But I was furious as the person who approached me, who was clearly a pickpocket.
The man got out at the next station with a few others. Beware of strangers approaching you on the metro and you really have to be on guard all the time.
