I was stopped by a traffic cop in Johannesburg who asked to see my license. He looked into the car and saw my husband resting his hand on the hand brake. He then started accusing me of not having control or taking responsibility of my role as a driver by allowing someone else to potentially touch or pull up the handbrake. It was the most blatant attempt at trying to intimidate us.
We refused to budge and said that if he wanted to arrest us, we would go with him or pay the fine. He quickly retreated and let us go. Never pay a bribe to a traffic officer. Always offer to go to the police station directly and pay the bribe. This will usually deter the cop and they will just let you go.
