During travel to Egypt, I did fell for this scam. Though I lost just 20 USD but I feel it’s something worth sharing.
Take my advice, try as much as possible to exchange USD for some Egyptian pound so you can cater for your immediate needs. I did same actually, except I didn’t get enough that will last me for that long.
So I was gonna visit the legendary Khalili local market, probably get some few things. I wasn’t having so much of local currency on me so I decided to trade a few USD for Egyptian currency. Thing is, you really shouldn’t trust any stranger, especially if it was your first visit to a strange country. So I asked a gentle man how I can make some money swap and he offered to help. He took me just beside this local store and asked how much I wanna trade. I told him a few USD and also, from experience, told him to show me some cash. I just felt I couldn’t trust him but I gave him 20usd. He requested I wait that he’ll be back but then guess what happened? I waited for hours and this guy never returned. It was a good thing I gave him $20 right? Well like I said, you don’t have to make such mistake too. So I left, not buying anything that day. Though I did go back but not that day.
