We were trying to find an atm and asked a security guard of an atm if that atm was working. He said no, then he asked us if we were new in town. After that he pointed us to another ATM. (Don’t have proof but this guard might be involved too)
We found an atm soon after an withdrew money and were leaving, when two police officers came in a tuk-tuk and stopped us. Then they demanded our IDs and wouldn’t accept to see a softcopy on my phone. It was immediately obvious they wanted money. So i offered to buy them a beer. Then paid them 2000kenyan shillings (20$). I did ask them for their ID but they wouldn’t show and got aggressive grabbing my shirt etc. They had guns and wireless comms. Guess they are corrupt police rather than conmen.
It was me and my wife. I considered calling their bluff and going to the police station with them. But didn’t want to get into that tuk-tuk with them. Also didn’t want to risk meeting more corrupt cops at the stations, and having to end up paying more.
Don’t trust people in Mombasa unless you have good reason to.
