I used to live in Barcelona for six months. During my first week there, I was still not familiar with the city and was unaware of how rife the pickpocket situation was.
I went to La Boqueria with some friends as we wanted to visit the famous food market and shop for some specialty food items. Little did we know that there were many gypsy pickpockets loitering around the area. At one of the stands selling jamon iberico, I took out my wallet to pay for some Spanish ham and noticed a woman staring at me. I did not pay much attention to her.
After the purchase we decided to go for lunch. It was very crowded at the market and people were bumping into one another. I happened to turn around and saw the same woman with her hand in my bag! I glared at her and was too shocked to scream. She just look back at me with open defiance and walked away.
It was my fault for not zipping up my bag and I was relieved nothing was stolen. So please zip up your bag and position the bag opening in front of you instead of having it behind you. I also started using cross body bag instead of should bag when I travel. It is safer that way.
