Not too long ago, my Canadian friend and I went for a holiday to Hikkaduwa Sri Lanka. While we were resting on the beach, a beach boy approached us and was trying to start a conversation with my Canadian friend. For some reason, he didn’t seem to notice that I’m a local.
anyway, He appeared friendly so she was being nice to him as well. but few minutes in, he was trying to convince us places to stay and things to do. He was trying to sell scuba activities for almost twice as much as the normal rates and was saying that he can talk to the owners and get us a discount.
As I was aware of the normal rates, I questioned him in Sinhala (local language) he was a bit shocked to find that I’m a local also was very annoyed. but without leaving the site, he then invited us for a party that is happening in a near hotel and more we refused more he got agitated and became a great nuisance.
People in Sri Lanka are usually very nice and trustworthy but that’s not always the case. Especially in coastal areas, if you are a girl traveling alone there is a great possibility of you becoming a target of scammers such as beach boys and independent travel guides.
they sometimes try to charge you even for travel tips also will try to sell activities for a higher rate also they try to become unnecessarily handsy, so watch out for that. it’s better not to make long conversations with anyone trying to be more friendly with you in touristy places in Sri Lanka.
