One day in Bangkok
I was looking for a taxi from Pratumwan to Chatuchak Market. I generally negotiate a rate from point to point before riding a taxi. One taxi stopped in front of me, and we negotiated a fair rate of 120 THB. As I got up in his taxi and it was starting to move, he showed me a map, saying on the way he needs to pick up something which will take only 5 minutes, and if Im ok with that. I said ok. Then he went on and said instead of waiting there, I should rather visit a Gem factory nearby for 10 minutes by when he will finish his job and pick me up. Then I said I shall wait in the car only and he should not take more than 5 minutes. Till then this Thai guy was very nice to me. But the moment I said I shall not go anywhere and wait in the car, he just went mad and started misbehaving. I said, its fine, he should stop the car and I shall take another taxi
. He kept on misbehaving and ultimately had to agree to me, but not before showing his extreme displeasure and actually kept on misbehaving till the last. This is a trap to take you to the Gem Factory, where they get a commission against bringing every customer. And they try this trick with unsuspecting customers. This left a very bad taste in my mouth, as otherwise I find Thai people very nice during all my 10 trips to Thailand. These scams happen in touristy places, but may be Thai Administration and Police can try to do something about it. I also want my fellow travelers to be aware of this trick/scam. But then, these scams are a small part to an otherwise beautiful country. Have fun guys.
