How it works:
- Opening: like in Peru, Ayahuasca tourism is an emerging market and involves taking a psychedelic herb with a shaman who performs a ritual to ‘cleanse you spiritually’ in the Amazon.
- Set-up: taking Ayahuasca is not illegal although tours are unregulated. Travelers have been robbed by rogue shamans while hallucinating under the influence of the drug.
Places to beware:
- Cuenca
- Napo River
What to do:
- There is no way of knowing how your body will react, the drug has caused illnesses and even deaths.
- Only go if you are clear with what you are getting into and willing to accept the risks.
