The was a pick-pocket scam here a few seasons ago that was quite common. Two scammers were involved. One to intentionally squirt ketchup or mustard on you and rush in to distract you by helping clean you up while the other picked your pockets. Should the ketchup/mustard thing happen to you – keep moving. This kind of thing is more common with the crowds at high season though. Harder to pull off when there aren’t crowds milling about. Also, never leave valuables sitting out on a table or towel unattended on the beach – that’s just asking for trouble. Wear shorts or trousers with zip or button pockets – i.e., cargo shorts. Much harder to lift a wallet from those.
