How it works:
- Situation: in the past, when leaving Costa Rica, you have to pay an exit tax in cash at a counter in the airport. Today, most airlines have since included that in the air ticket price.
- Set-up: scammers posing as airport officials will convince you that the tax still has to be paid in cash. They bring you to an unused counter, show you fake forms and collect payment.
Places to beware:
- Alajuela: Juan Santamaría International Airport
What to do:
- If you are unsure (i.e. a departure tax is not shown on your airline receipt), check with the official airline staff at the airport.
