Just sharing my experience as solo traveler for second time in Istanbul, first time was 2015.
First Istanbul is still beautiful and it will always be, if you like museums and walks and beautiful weather and go to respectable places it will be perfect. but you just need to be more careful, as
I found Istanbul less safe, less liberal, less friendly.
If you been solo traveler to Turkey you must be used to be contacted by stranger who pretends to be friendly and wants to take you to a place where you get scammed or robed, when I tried to avoid him, not replying he started to say bad words on my back and I had to reply him, he tries to scare me so I have scared him back and threatened that I will call police.
at nights when you are solo and don’t want to go to party alone (or not allowed because you are solo man!), and when you find the places you know were shut down, your options are far less.
You will rarely find good conversation and you will rarely find solo travelers, Turkish rarely talk English same with tourist families there.
It is less safe, especially area around Taxim is chaotic,2 incidents:
– 3 Turkish men tried to start a fight or scare with me, I had to shout at them and took steps back, and opened the phone to call police, then they went back, since they were coming from a poor area around Taxim, I think their intention was robing me
I saw a woman on Istiklal st. pushed/hit a small child (of a tourist) on her shoulder and continued her walk, she looked like 45yrs Turkish woman.
Istanbul is beautiful and surely a magical destination, but you just need to be more careful and avoid chaotic places.
