How it works:
- Central Asia is famous for its carpets. That said, a lot of the carpets you find in Uzbekistan actually come from Turkmenistan and sometimes Afghanistan, rather than being made here.
- Some tricks vendors use include passing off machine made carpet as handmade ones and passing off carpet as older than it actually is (i.e. antique).
Places to beware:
What to do:
- If you would like to buy, head to reputable places or official places like Factory in Samarkand (though note that only some of their carpet are made on the site with the rest imported from Afghanistan).
- Get help from a trusted local or know how to recognize the real deal – e.g. handmade carpets tend to not be perfect as compared to machine-made ones and there may be some quirks in design/pattern which you may spot.
