How it works:
- Opening: a self-proclaimed doctor/professor brings you on a free tour. Free tea or a massage is given as well to make you feel good.
- Set-up: he claims that you suffer from ailments unknown to you and recommends herbal remedies. He also claims to have been cultivating herbs for thousands of years and is accredited by the government. You are then sold low quality stuff at a few times of what you can get elsewhere. Some have also found their credit cards overcharged.
Places to beware:
- Kandy
- Galle
- Matale
- Matara
- Negombo
What to do:
- It is best to avoid spice gardens, or you can go for the free tour but not buy unless you know your stuff.
- Else, head to reputable shops.
