How it works:
- Situation: the ceremony involves Buddhist pilgrims gifting monks food and alms as they move through the streets in the early morning. Some vendors target tourists by selling poor quality rice and mats to kneel on.
- Version 1: claiming that the ceremony is over soon and rushing you to buy rice as a donation. Only at the end do they reveal the inflated price.
- Version 2: when the ceremony is over, they bring you to a shrine or temple nearby . They teach you how to bow to a Buddha statue and then demand an inflated fee for the rice.
Places to beware:
- Luang Prabang
What to do:
- You can buy your own rice beforehand, or watch from a viewing area across the road from the monks to not be hassled.
