How it works:
- On the streets, there are dealers who advertise very favourable exchange rates. What happens if you deal with them is that you may get counterfeit currency in return.
Places to beware:
What to do:
- Change: at licensed bureaus, banks, airports or hotels.
- Alternative: use a travel debit card like the Mah Card or tourist card from banks (e.g. Bank Melli).
- Reason: Iran is cut off from the international banking system and so international cards do not work here. With a travel debit card, you don’t have to lug cash around.
