How it works:
- Touts on public beaches tell unsuspecting tourists that they are on a private beach and have to pay a fee.
- This is similar to a scam in Australia, where shady tour operators charged Chinese tourists $100 each to walk on Bondi beach by pointing to a random sign in English (the tourists were unfamiliar with English).
Places to beware:
- Hurghada
- Sharm El Sheikh
What to do:
- Do your research or check with someone in authority such as the tourist police.
- Else, just head somewhere else.
